The Fish Market: Osaka Kizu Wholesale
One fish, two fish, every fish you could think of fresh, filetted, and served up with a side of ponzu were all available to the Osaka Kizu Wholesale Fish Market. When you picture a fish market, an image doesn’t even pop into your head, but a smell and this market had no fish smell because the products were either fresher than fresh or still swimming.
A lot of cool species were featured at this market too, groupers, place which are the Japanese version of fluke but a lot fatter, and a lot of miscellaneous crustaceans. We got there around breakfast time and our stomachs were rumbling for some fresh fish. Aisles and rows of fish to choose from we almost didn't know what to get, we could’ve walked out with the whole market. We picked out a mixed bag of fish, such as yellowtail, eels, carpaccio, and sea urchin for starters. We all enjoyed an excellent feast of fresh raw fish and went back for seconds.
Another nice feature accompanying the fish was all of the fresh produce. A sidenote from my travels to Japan was how the fruit tasted so much different compared to how it is here in the US. The strawberries I had with my raw eel tasted like nothing I’ve ever had before, just absolutely delicious.
Overall, with the quality of the food at the market and everything we ate the whole time during this trip, I was blown away by how gourmet and sophisticated the simplest foods came down to with just one bite. After walking all the aisles at the Osaka Kizu Wholesale Market, snacking on squid jerky and freshly squeezed orange juice, I would highly recommend adding this stop to your itinerary on your next trip to Japan.
