Fluke Regulations Based on your Region

Fluke Regulations Based on your Region

Fluke season is right around the corner, and now’s the time to get dialed in. Whether you're chasing your first keeper or hunting down a true doormat, success starts with preparation. Make sure your gear is ready—fresh leader, sharp hooks, and confidence baits that match the conditions you’ll be fishing.

Just as important as your setup is knowing the rules. Regulations can vary from state to state, and even between specific bodies of water, so take the time to understand size limits, bag limits, and open seasons anywhere you plan to fish. Staying informed not only keeps you legal, it helps protect the fishery for seasons to come.

Every trip is a shot at a new personal best. Put in the time, learn your areas, adjust to the bite, and stay patient. That next drift could be the one that puts your biggest fluke ever on deck.

Here's your rundown of East Coast fluke regulations to know before you go!

New York

  • Season: Typically early May – early/mid October

  • Size Limit: ~19" early season → ~19.5" later season

  • Bag Limit: 3 fish

  • Notes: NY often uses split seasons with size changes to maximize fishing days (Department of Environmental Conservation)

New Jersey

  • Season: Early May – late September

  • Size Limit: ~18"

  • Bag Limit: 3 fish

  • Notes: NJ has experimented with slot limits in past years, but currently favors a more standard size + bag structure (Re/Max of long beach island)

Connecticut

  • Season:

    • May 4 – Aug 1

    • Aug 2 – Oct 15

  • Size Limit:

    • 19" (early season)

    • 19.5" (late season)

  • Bag Limit: 3 fish

  • Notes: Shore anglers sometimes have different allowances in designated areas (CT.gov)

Rhode Island

  • Season: Typically May – December (long season)

  • Size Limit: ~19"

  • Bag Limit: 4–6 fish (often more generous than neighboring states)

  • Notes: Known for more liberal limits, making it a popular destination

Massachusetts

  • Season: Usually late May – mid October

  • Size Limit: ~17–18"

  • Bag Limit: ~4 fish

  • Notes: Historically smaller size limit than NY/NJ, good for keeping fish

Delaware

  • Season: May – September

  • Size Limit: ~16–17"

  • Bag Limit: 4 fish

  • Notes: Often one of the easier states to keep a limit

Maryland (Ocean/Coastal)

  • Season: May – September

  • Size Limit: ~16"

  • Bag Limit: 4 fish

  • Notes: Chesapeake Bay rules differ slightly from ocean regs

Virginia

  • Season: Year-round or very long season

  • Size Limit: ~16–17.5"

  • Bag Limit: 4 fish

  • Notes: Generally angler-friendly regulations

North Carolina

  • Season: Often very short (can be weeks or limited windows)

  • Size Limit: ~15"

  • Bag Limit: 1–4 fish depending on year
